Patricia Cornwell Talks New Book 'IDENTITY UNKNOWN' | Oct. 9, 2024 | News 19 at 9 a.m.
SUMMARY: Patricia Cornwell previews her upcoming forensic thriller, “Identity Unknown,” the 29th book in her Scarpetta series featuring Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Kay Scarpetta. The story begins with Scarpetta investigating a child abuse case in a morgue when she is called to an abandoned amusement park, where a body with unusual features, possibly linked to UFO sightings, is discovered. Cornwell discusses how she keeps Scarpetta relevant by incorporating contemporary issues and ideas, expressing her hope that the character becomes a lasting figure for readers. Readers can follow Cornwell’s work through her website, PatriciaCornwell.com.
Patricia Cornwell’s latest forensic thriller, IDENTITY UNKNOWN, once again features chief medical examiner Dr. Kay Scarpetta overseeing complex autopsies and juggling the political and social pressures that come with murder investigations and highly sensitive national security concerns.
Summoned to an unnerving, abandoned theme park to retrieve a body, Scarpetta is devastated to learn that the victim is a man she once loved. While teaching in Rome during the early days of her career, Scarpetta had a love affair with acclaimed astrophysicist Sal Giordano that led to a lifelong friendship.
The murder scene is bizarre, with a crop circle of petals around the body, and Giordano’s skin is strangely red. Scarpetta’s niece in the Secret Service, Lucy, believes he was dropped from an unidentified flying craft. She is shocked to find her friend seems to have deliberately left her a clue.
From the Oz-themed amusement park to a terrifying body retrieval from the bottom of the Chesapeake Bay, Scarpetta faces some of her biggest fears in her pursuit of the truth. As the investigators are torn between suspicions of otherworldly forces, and about Giordano himself, Scarpetta detects an explanation closer to home that, in her mind, is far more evil.
Patricia Cornwell has sold over 100 million books. Her first novel, Postmortem, is the first bona fide forensic thriller. It paved the way for an explosion of entertainment featuring in all things forensic across film, television and literature. And now, Amazon Prime Video has officially ordered two seasons of Scarpetta! Nicole Kidman is set to star as Scarpetta with Jamie Lee Curtis, Bobby Cannavale, Simon Baker, and Ariana DeBose in supporting roles.
