AG Fitch says she’s following Supreme Court’s ruling on tidelands leases

SUMMARY: Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch is standing by the Mississippi Supreme Court’s ruling on tideland leases. In March, the court ruled in favor of allowing Biloxi and Harrison County to lease property on the tidelands to RW Development without the need for tidelands leases. Despite the ongoing push from Secretary of State Michael Watson to enforce tidelands leases, Fitch stated that she will uphold the court’s decision. Watson has accused Fitch of costing taxpayers unnecessary funds and has hired a private firm for $75,000 to prosecute entities violating tidelands leasing laws.

Justice Department drops payment discrimination lawsuit against Mississippi Senate

SUMMARY: The U.S. Department of Justice has dismissed a lawsuit against the Mississippi Senate for alleged pay discrimination filed by former staff attorney Kristie Metcalfe, who claimed she was paid significantly less than her white colleagues during her tenure from 2011-19. The lawsuit had been initiated in the final days of the Biden administration, stating that Metcalfe earned $55,000, while her peers made up to $121,800, and received substantial raises shortly after her hiring. The dismissal, announced by Trump-appointed officials, did not provide specific reasons, although state attorneys argued that Metcalfe was not covered by civil rights laws.
