Activists frustrated over Petal alderman’s attempt to ban library books
SUMMARY: Members of the LGBTQ community in Petal, Mississippi, are outraged and disappointed by a recent request to remove children’s books about gender and sexuality from the Petal Library. Alderman Blake Nobles requested the removal of books written for children 8 and under on topics like transgenderism and gender dysphoria, stating they are inappropriate for children. However, opponents of the ban argue that the books help queer and trans kids feel less alone and that removing them could be harmful, potentially increasing suicide rates for these children. They also argue that parents should have the right to choose what their children read. The library has not made a decision on removing the books.
