ACT scores in Mississippi reported as second-lowest in U.S.
SUMMARY: ACT scores in the US have reached a 30-year low, with Mississippi ranking second to last in average scores. In the 2022-23 school year, Mississippi students averaged 17.6 out of 36, compared to the national average of 19.5. This is a decline from the previous year’s average of 17.4. Mississippi is one of six states that require all students to take the ACT before graduating high school. Despite improvements in other areas of education, officials attribute the low ACT scores to the increase in colleges requiring ACT scores for admission.

SUMMARY: Terrell Buckley, a Pascagoula native and College Football Hall of Famer, has been hired as the new head coach at Mississippi Valley State University (MVSU). A former Super Bowl-winning defensive back, Buckley brings 18 years of coaching experience, including stints at Mississippi State, Ole Miss, and with the XFL’s Orlando Guardians. He replaces Kendrick Wade, who was let go after a 1-11 season. Buckley, known for his ball-hawking skills as a player, is committed to building a culture of hard work and accountability at MVSU, with the goal of turning around the Delta Devils’ football program.
