Absentee voting in Jones County
SUMMARY: Across the Pine Belt, people are gearing up for the 2023 primary elections. In-person absentee voting ended on Saturday, but those who have already cast their ballot, either in-person or by mail, still have their votes counted as long as the mail-in ballot is postmarked by August 8th. So far, the numbers have been lower than in past primaries. In the previous primaries 4 years ago, there were 893 absentee votes, but this year only 648 have been received so far. The Circuit Clerk in Jones County says it could be the reason for the lower numbers.
The results so far in Jones County show that the numbers have been lower than in years past.

SUMMARY: Columbus Mayor Keith Gasin announced he will not seek reelection, revealing his decision during a press conference at City Hall. Gasin, who was elected in 2021, endorsed Darren Leech, a pastor at Genesis Church and member of the Memphis Town Community Action Group focused on redeveloping the old Kerr McGee plant. Gasin, who took a two-week health break in August, stated he made the decision to step down before that break.
