Able SC, Attorney General react, as lawsuit threatens to end “Section 504”
SUMMARY: A lawsuit threatens to dismantle “Section 504,” a law protecting people with disabilities for over 50 years. Able SC, a local organization, warns that this could adversely impact thousands, highlighting the law’s significance in areas like healthcare, education, and employment. The lawsuit challenges recent updates to include gender dysphoria, which South Carolina joined after the Biden Administration’s executive order. Attorney General Alan Wilson, while pausing the lawsuit, reassured that accommodations for disabled children will remain in place. However, Able SC President Kimberly Tissot insists the law is still at risk and advocates for the lawsuit to be dropped to protect all individuals with disabilities.

State rests case in Canebrake Murder Trial
SUMMARY: The trial of musician Zachary Hughes, accused of murdering Christina Parcell in October 2021, reached its fifth day as the state rested its case. Over 30 witnesses testified, including a sergeant and a medical examiner who noted 35 stab wounds consistent with a knife but could not identify the murder weapon. DNA evidence linked Hughes to the crime scene, found on Parcell’s bike and under her fingernails. The defense challenged the DNA evidence’s admissibility and filed for a mistrial, both of which were denied. The trial resumes Tuesday, with the defense set to present its case.

Scout Motors’ effort to directly sell its electric SUVs where they’ll make them stalls
SUMMARY: A House subcommittee in South Carolina recently held a brief meeting on legislation allowing Volkswagen-backed Scout Motors to sell electric SUVs directly to consumers, a proposal facing strong opposition from traditional auto dealers. The debate was adjourned, leaving the bill unresolved before the legislative session ends in May. Scout argues that direct sales promote consumer choice and economic growth, while dealers contend that their established structures ensure better service and competition. Governor Henry McMaster emphasized the need for a thorough discussion given the substantial investment Scout is making in the state, which includes over $1 billion in incentives.
