Abandoned cars become an issue on Mississippi’s highways
SUMMARY: Abandoned vehicles on Mississippi highways pose safety risks, says the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT). Michael Flood, MDOT’s public information officer, noted that distracted drivers may collide with these vehicles, causing accidents. The agency urges drivers to be mindful of the timeframe for removing abandoned vehicles before they are towed. Vehicles parked on the shoulder or right of way will be tagged by the Highway Patrol and must be removed within five days or they will be towed. Owners have 45 days to claim their vehicles before they are auctioned off.

MDOT to make improvements at Brandon intersection where teen died in crash
SUMMARY: Following the tragic death of 18-year-old Greyson Huff in a crash at the intersection of Highway 18 and Sunset Drive in Brandon, Mississippi, the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) has announced safety improvements. These enhancements include rumble strips, a new flashing LED stop sign, and flashing intersection warning signs. Despite community requests for a traffic signal, state engineers determined it was not warranted due to data indicating that signals can make intersections more dangerous. MDOT aims to improve visibility and reduce speeds, with the enhancements expected to be completed next week.

Mississippi expects only a small growth in state budget
SUMMARY: Mississippi’s budget for the year starting July 1 is projected to grow by less than 1%, with an estimated $7.6 billion in the general fund. This is slower growth compared to previous years, due to flat sales tax collections and a drop in corporate income tax revenues. While income tax and insurance premium tax collections rose, the state’s economic outlook is more conservative. Governor Tate Reeves advocates for phasing out the income tax, while Lt. Governor Delbert Hosemann favors reducing grocery sales tax. Lawmakers will finalize budget recommendations in December, with debates set for the 2024 legislative session.
