A 40-day Target boycott began this week. What to know about the protest and its potential impact
SUMMARY: A 40-day boycott of Target, called the “Target Fast,” began during Lent to protest the retailer’s decision to end some diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. Organized by Rev. Jamal Bryant and civil rights leaders, the boycott encourages supporters to shop at Black-owned businesses instead. Participants emphasize accountability and justice, urging Target to restore its DEI commitments. Target faced backlash after announcing the phase-out of programs intended to support Black employees and businesses. Experts suggest that the boycott reflects the risks companies face when their actions contradict previous messaging, particularly regarding the trust of marginalized communities.

2 days of clashes and revenge killings in Syria leave more than 600 people dead
SUMMARY: Clashes between security forces and supporters of ousted Syrian President Bashar Assad have resulted in over 600 deaths, marking a significant escalation in violence since the conflict began 14 years ago. The violence included revenge killings targeting Assad’s Alawite minority by Sunni gunmen loyal to the new government. Residents reported atrocities, with bodies left unburied and homes burned. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights noted that at least 428 Alawites, along with pro-Assad fighters and security forces, were killed. In response, government forces claim to have regained control, while many Alawites are fleeing to Lebanon for safety.

Could Pine Hills become its own city? That’s what local leaders are asking
SUMMARY: In Pine Hills, Florida, a movement advocates for the area to become its own municipality, following examples from Belle Isle and Winter Park. Supporters, including resident Moliere Dimache, argue that local governance and a dedicated police force would improve public safety and address crime concerns. The proposal for incorporation, which aligns with discussions dating back nearly 60 years, would enable residents to manage their community independently. However, this initiative could lead to increased property taxes for city services. Dimache plans to file incorporation paperwork, aiming to bring the proposal before voters after rallying community support.
