Legal battle looms as Trump orders a funding freeze during a review of federal loans and grants

Published

www.abccolumbia.com – Associated Press – 2025-01-28 11:47:00

SUMMARY: President Trump’s administration is pausing federal grants and loans starting January 28, 2025, to conduct an ideological review of spending. The pause aims to ensure compliance with Trump’s executive orders targeting progressive policies on transgender rights, environmental justice, and diversity. While federal assistance like Social Security and Medicare will remain unaffected, the freeze could disrupt healthcare, education, and research initiatives. Legal action is expected, as critics, including Democratic leaders, argue the move is illegal and harmful. The pause is part of Trump’s broader effort to align federal spending with conservative priorities, raising concerns over its impact on vulnerable programs.

SUMMARY: Flu cases have surged significantly, with hospitals reporting double the number of flu patients compared to December. Since the flu season began on September 29th, over 400 positive cases have emerged, with daily cases ranging from 20 to over 50 in January. Dr. Paul Richardson from Conway Medical Center noted that while the season started slow, it has intensified, currently with eight patients hospitalized due to flu complications. The South Carolina Department of Health reported its first pediatric flu death of the season, alongside numerous hospitalizations. Dr. Richardson urges caution and recommends flu vaccinations, which remain available through May.

Health providers are urging the public to take the flu seriously as hundreds of positive cases have been reported this month alone. This warning follows the South Carolina Department of Health’s report of the first pediatric flu-related death of the season late last week.
