Bill introduced in Mississippi aims to define child grooming as punishable crime
SUMMARY: A new bill in Mississippi, HB 571, introduced by Rep. Sam Creekmore, aims to criminalize child grooming, punishable by up to 10 years in prison for repeat offenders. The bill was inspired by the Causey family, whose child was groomed by an adult but found no legal recourse. Grooming involves building trust with a minor for future sexual abuse. While Mississippi lacks laws defining grooming as a crime, similar laws exist in Texas, Florida, and other states. HB 571 would be a step toward protecting children and deterring offenders. The bill is under review in the House Judiciary B Committee and could become law by July 2025.Â
