Lots of new faces and maybe a more conservative tilt as South Carolina Legislature starts session
SUMMARY: The South Carolina General Assembly commenced its two-year session with nearly 20% new lawmakers, potentially shifting its traditionally slow-progressing stance on issues. The Senate quickly initiated a debate on a bill for $8,000 school vouchers funded by state lottery money, following a prior law struck down by the Supreme Court. Tax cuts are another focus, with Governor McMaster proposing to accelerate cuts to the income tax. Tensions within the Republican House, particularly from a conservative Freedom Caucus, are evident. With significant budget surpluses, the state plans investments in education and disaster relief, alongside funding for a new neurological hospital.

6 planets align in the night sky next week
SUMMARY: Next week, skywatchers can observe an exciting celestial event with an alignment of up to six planets. Meteorologist Jenna Warner highlights that on January 15-16, Mars will be at its brightest due to its closest approach to Earth and being in opposition, allowing for detailed observation with telescopes. Additionally, a conjunction of Venus and Saturn will occur this Friday and Saturday, bringing the two planets closest together in the night sky. Viewers may need telescopes to see Uranus and Neptune during the upcoming planetary alignment, which features four or more planets lined up simultaneously.
In mid-January, the nighttime sky will put on a show for skywatchers and astronomers. Six planets will appear to align in their planetary paths and four will be bright enough to view with the naked eye. These planets will seem to form a line in the night sky, which is known as the ecliptic.
