Memorial Health raising awareness for cervical cancer, routine screenings
SUMMARY: Cervical cancer is preventable and treatable when detected early, making regular screenings essential. Dr. Donna Kof discusses high cervical cancer rates in Mississippi, with about 14,000 diagnoses and 4,000 deaths annually in the U.S. Routine screenings are recommended starting at age 21, every 3 to 5 years, as HPV, a common sexually transmitted virus, causes most cases. While HPV is usually harmless, it can lead to cervical cancer over time; however, the HPV vaccine is available for ages 9 to 45. Early-stage detection leads to high survival rates, highlighting the importance of regular health check-ups for women.
