Man accused of burning woman to death on a New York City subway train is set to be arraigned
SUMMARY: Sebastian Zapeta, 33, faces murder and arson charges for allegedly burning 57-year-old Debrina Kawam to death on a Brooklyn subway train. The incident occurred on Dec. 22 when Zapeta is accused of igniting Kawam while she slept and watching her burn. He admitted to being in surveillance footage but cited heavy drinking as a reason for not remembering the event. A Guatemalan citizen with a prior deportation, Zapeta’s top charge could lead to life in prison without parole. The case has sparked renewed concerns about subway safety, prompting increased police presence in high-crime areas.

Special session on condo relief still needs consensus as costs continue to rise
SUMMARY: Florida lawmakers face growing pressure to tackle rising costs for condo owners, with a special legislative session potentially on the horizon. The state House, Senate, and governor remain divided on necessary reforms, with concerns that the regular session starting March 4 may be too late. Condo owners report increased fees and struggles to sell properties, with insurance rates and post-Surfside regulations driving costs up significantly. Governor Ron DeSantis emphasizes the urgency of addressing the issue but acknowledges a lack of consensus among lawmakers. Calls for reforms include establishing uniform standards for repair assessments to prevent inflated costs.
