Trading in a new car? Here's a 'gotcha' to watch out for
SUMMARY: As many consider trading in their vehicles for new ones this time of year, consumer reporter John Mates warns about potential pitfalls. When Mark Hoffower traded in his SUV for a new truck, he was told the loan would be paid off. However, a month later, he learned that the payment had not been made, leaving him worried about his credit score. The dealership cited a paperwork error. To avoid similar issues, consumer law experts advise against trading in a car just before a payment is due and suggest checking with the lender 10 days after the trade-in to confirm the payoff.
If you trade in a vehicle when buying a new one, there are steps you can take to avoid a mix-up that can turn into a headache.

Amid a $7 million deficit to Texas’ suicide hotline, thousands of calls are abandoned monthly
SUMMARY: In Texas, call centers for the 988 suicide hotline are experiencing a $7 million funding shortfall, leading to thousands of abandoned calls each month despite rising demand and a growing suicide rate. The hotline, crucial for providing emergency mental health services, has seen significant call volumes since its launch in 2022 but struggles with staffing and federal funding declines. Less than 85% of calls are answered in-state, and a proposed Senate Bill aims to establish a trust fund to improve funding through cellphone surcharges. Advocates stress the need for equitable support for crisis services to match emergency services like 911.
