Imported vs. Domestic: The fight to protect Gulf seafood
SUMMARY: Mississippi lawmakers are debating new seafood labeling laws that would require restaurants to disclose if menu items like crab, shrimp, and oysters are from the U.S. or other countries. The goal is to increase transparency for consumers. Some, like Chef Dalton Hendricks of Jordan River Steamer, advocate for local seafood, emphasizing community pride. While the seafood industry supports disclosure, concerns exist over potential costs, such as $4,800 annually for menu reprints. With fishermen facing challenges, local businesses prioritize supporting Gulf seafood. The bills, currently under debate, may soon move to the opposite chamber for a vote.
Mississippi lawmakers are considering House Bill 602 and Senate Bill 2014, both designed to ensure consumers know whether seafood is imported or locally sourced
