Azerbaijani airliner crashes in Kazakhstan, killing 38 with 29 survivors, officials say
SUMMARY: An Azerbaijani airliner, an Embraer 190, crashed near Aktau, Kazakhstan, on December 25, 2024, killing 38 of the 67 people onboard. The flight, from Baku to Grozny, diverted to Aktau due to worsening weather and a reported bird strike, attempting an emergency landing 3 km from the airport. Among the passengers were Azerbaijani, Russian, Kazakh, and Kyrgyz citizens. Mobile footage showed the plane descending steeply before crashing in flames. Authorities from Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, and Russia are investigating. Azerbaijan’s President Aliyev declared December 26 a day of mourning, and Russia offered assistance.
