2 journalists working for Kurdish media killed in clashes in northern Syria
SUMMARY: Two Kurdish journalists, Nazim Dastan and Cihan Bilgin, were killed in northern Syria while covering clashes between Syrian Kurdish militias and Turkish-backed fighters. The incident occurred near the Tishrin Dam, a site of ongoing conflict between U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces and opposition forces. Meanwhile, following the fall of President Bashar Assad’s regime, Syria’s transition has been uneasy, especially for minority groups like Christians, under the main rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham. The U.N. warned against large-scale refugee returns to Syria, citing the country’s fragile peace and readiness for reintegration. Sweden also ended core support for the UN relief agency for Palestinians.

Senate set to approve 235th judge of Biden’s term, beating Trump’s tally
SUMMARY: President Biden is set to achieve his 235th judicial confirmation, surpassing Trump’s total, as Democrats focus on diversifying the federal courts. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has scheduled votes for two California district judges, with the first confirmation equalizing Trump’s count. Biden’s appointees include a significant number of women, people of color, and public defenders, enhancing the judiciary’s diversity. Despite fewer circuit court and Supreme Court appointments compared to Trump, Democrats emphasize the importance of diverse backgrounds in improving judicial decision-making. Republicans, critical of Biden’s choices, aim to reclaim judicial influence as they anticipate a new Senate majority.
