Mississippi Rep. Charles Young Jr. passes away at 62
SUMMARY: Mississippi Rep. Charles Young, Jr., 62, passed away at a Jackson hospital, with no cause of death reported. A Democrat, Young was elected to represent the 82nd District in 2012 and served four terms, following his father, Charles Young, Sr., who held the position from 1980 until 2009. Young was an advocate for human rights and supported the removal of the Confederate emblem from the state flag in 2020. He served as vice chair of the House Corrections Committee and was involved in various other committees. Funeral arrangements have not been announced, and the governor has 30 days to schedule a special election to fill his vacancy.

SUMMARY: Ole Miss defensive tackle Walter Nolen has been named a consensus All-American after a standout junior season. Recognized on five major All-America teams, including first-team selections by the Associated Press and the Football Writers Association of America, Nolen excelled with 14 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, and 48 total tackles. He also ranked as the No. 5 run-stopper in college football. Nolen is Ole Miss’s 14th consensus All-American and the third defensive player to earn this honor. He declared for the NFL Draft but will play in the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl on January 2 before departing.

SUMMARY: Jeffery Walker, a former Mississippi State Capitol Police officer, has been charged with felony excessive force against a handcuffed arrestee, identified as “E.S.” On July 27, 2022, Walker chased E.S. during a traffic stop, leading to a crash. After E.S. was handcuffed by another officer, Walker allegedly slammed his head into a car, forced him to the ground, and kicked him, causing injuries. Walker pleaded not guilty to depriving E.S. of civil rights. He faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted. The case is being investigated by the FBI and prosecuted by federal attorneys.
