Government Shutdown Looms as Congress Faces Impasse Over Short-Term Funding Bill
SUMMARY: With less than 48 hours until a potential government shutdown, Congress faces a critical deadline. President-elect Trump strongly opposed a bipartisan short-term funding bill, insisting it needed a smaller price tag. His opposition created chaos, as he warned Republicans that voting for the bill would lead to primary challenges and urged them to call Democrats’ bluff on a government shutdown. This has forced lawmakers back to negotiations, with a deal including disaster relief and aid to farmers in jeopardy. Meanwhile, Republicans voted to release an Ethics Committee report on former Congressman Matt Gaetz, who faces serious accusations.

What's next in the potential federal government shutdown
SUMMARY: Lawmakers are racing to prevent a government shutdown as funding was set to expire at midnight. A proposed plan that would have extended government funding for three months was rejected by both House leaders, despite backing from President-elect Donald Trump. The plan included disaster aid and support for farmers, alongside a two-year debt ceiling raise but failed to gain sufficient support. Both Republicans and Democrats expressed frustration with the deadlock, fearing the consequences of a shutdown, which could leave federal workers, including military personnel and TSA agents, without pay. A decision is urgently needed to avert this scenario.
In a hastily convened evening vote punctuated by angry outbursts over the self-made crisis, the lawmakers failed to reach the two-thirds threshold needed for passage
