Proposed Rules Would Require Students to Prove Citizenship or Legal Immigration Status

Published

on

oklahomawatch.org – Jennifer Palmer – 2024-12-17 17:11:00

SUMMARY: The Oklahoma Department of Education has proposed new rules requiring students to prove U.S. citizenship or legal immigration status to enroll in public schools. While undocumented students are not prohibited from enrolling under Supreme Court precedent, asking about immigration status could violate federal law, potentially deterring families from enrolling their children. The proposed rules include a list of acceptable documents for proof and mandate districts to report students lacking citizenship or legal status, excluding personal information. Critics argue that immigration status isn’t necessary for assessing educational needs and fear the policy may discourage immigrant families from participating in school activities.

SUMMARY: Oklahoma City leaders are meeting today to discuss the future location of the Oklahoma County Jail amidst ongoing struggles between the county and city. Recently, the Oklahoma County Board of Commissioners requested court intervention after the city denied a rezoning request for the jail’s construction on East Graham Boulevard. Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond urged both parties to collaborate and emphasized the city should follow its zoning codes while allowing the county some immunity. Voters approved the jail’s construction nearly three years ago, and discussions continue as the city remains silent on the ongoing litigation.
