Tennesseans are overdosing at an alarming rate, but the ‘gold standard’ of treatment carries stigma
SUMMARY: A settlement of $102.5 million was reached with Suboxone maker Indivior Inc. over anti-competitive practices. In Tennessee, opioid overdose deaths surged in 2022, with over 3,000 fatalities. Medication-assisted treatment (MAT), including Suboxone and methadone, is seen as an effective solution to combat addiction but faces stigma and opposition. Locals criticized a proposed methadone clinic, fearing it would increase crime, despite studies showing otherwise. Concerns about MAT are heightened by poor operators in the field. An investigation revealed that a Tennessee-based chain, Acadia Healthcare, compromised patient care by prioritizing profit over effective treatment, offering methadone inappropriately and neglecting therapy.

Massive fire from gas line explosion blamed on lighting strike
SUMMARY: A massive fire in Cerville was believed to be caused by a lightning strike that ruptured a gas line around 8:30 PM on Bailey Station Road, leading to extensive flames visible from miles away. The fire has since been extinguished, but Bailey Station Road remains closed in both directions as MLGW crews repair the gas line and restore power to street and traffic lights. While power has largely been restored to nearby homes and businesses, the cleanup and repairs are ongoing. Traffic is beginning to build as people navigate the detours around the closed road.
A massive fire that burned for hours Monday night likely started when lightning struck a gas line, MLGW said. READ MORE: https://www.fox13memphis.com/news/large-fire-in-collierville-likely-caused-by-lightning-strike-to-gas-line-mlgw-says/article_6bb2086e-bc1d-11ef-940e-bfdd483129cb.html

New TSU interim president faces scrutiny from state legislators
SUMMARY: Dwayne Tucker became Tennessee State University’s interim president in December 2024 during a challenging financial period for the institution. His first day involved addressing the State Building Commission, which had recently assisted TSU in avoiding bankruptcy by reallocating federal funds. The state is now requesting further budget cuts, prompting discussions of declaring financial exigency to enable significant changes like ending faculty tenure. Tucker, highlighting TSU’s $2 billion underfunding since the 1980s, emphasized the need for realistic expectations regarding state support. With past leadership issues complicating the situation, Tucker aims to navigate TSU through these financial challenges effectively.
