Audit: Risk increased for misuse of Hurricane Florence recovery funds | North Carolina
SUMMARY: A North Carolina state audit revealed increased risks for misuse of Hurricane Florence recovery funds due to failures by the Department of Public Safety (DPS). Florence, which struck in October 2018, resulted in $942.4 million allocated for recovery, yet the DPS distributed $502 million with limited monitoring between late 2018 and early 2021. An additional $18 million faced similar scrutiny post-2021. The audit recommended improved monitoring policies, while the DPS disagreed with the findings. Recent legislative measures and proposed budgets for further disaster recovery remain contentious amidst ongoing litigation and political negotiations regarding the appropriation of funds.

What's known about the bombing that killed Lt. General Igor Kirillov in Moscow
SUMMARY: Lieutenant General Eagle Kurilov was assassinated in Moscow over 24 hours ago, leaving behind signs of the explosion and flowers from mourners. Russian officials have detained a suspect, Ahmed Kabanov, a 29-year-old from Uzbekistan, who reportedly confessed on video, although the authenticity of this claim remains unverified. There is growing concern about how such a high-profile assassination could occur so close to the Kremlin, especially since Kurilov is regarded as the most senior military official killed since the Ukraine conflict began. Expectations rise for a statement from President Putin in the coming days.
Russian officials said today (Wednesday) that it has detained a suspect in the killing of a senior general in Moscow, described as an Uzbek citizen recruited by Ukrainian intelligence services. Lt. General Igor Kirillov was killed by a bomb hidden in a scooter outside his apartment building, a day after Ukraine’s security service leveled criminal charges against him. NBC’s Keir Simmons reports from Moscow. (Credit: NBC)
