Mississippi State University veterinary students are assisting in the recovery process by conducting initial examinations, blood work, and monitoring the turtles’ health. Cold-stunned turtles often experience pneumonia and frostbite, requiring personalized treatment plans, including fluids and antibiotics. The students gain invaluable experience that will aid their future careers while fostering a commitment to environmental conservation. Once rehabilitated, the turtles will be released back into Mississippi Sound.

Twenty-three turtles will be flown in for rehabilitation, taking around three to four months, with support from Mississippi State University’s veterinary team. Once recovered, many will be released with satellite tags for tracking. Salangi also mentioned four dolphins found dead at Petit Bois Island, with ongoing necropsies to investigate the cause, which may be environmental or indicative of an epidemic.
