Lewisville ISD votes to close 5 elementary schools
SUMMARY: The Louisville ISD School Board voted unanimously to close five elementary schools due to a $4.5 million budget deficit and declining enrollment. Despite parents’ emotional pleas during a packed board meeting, the board approved the closures and boundary adjustments, with one vote against the closure of Highland Village Elementary. Parents expressed concerns over the impact on their children’s education and their chosen schools. Board members acknowledged the difficulty of the decision and encouraged continued advocacy as the legislative session approaches in January. The changes are set to take effect in the 2025-26 school year.
The schools that will close are Owen Elementary, Creekside Elementary, Garden Ridge Elementary, Highland Village Elementary, and Polser STEM Academy.

UTMB Galveston first in Texas to use AI for routine cancer diagnosis
SUMMARY: UTMB Galveston pathologists have integrated an AI tool for prostate cancer diagnosis, becoming Texas’s first academic healthcare center to do so. The AI generates digital overlays on prostate biopsies to enhance diagnosis accuracy, even identifying cancers previously overlooked by human pathologists. Dr. Mike Laposata emphasizes the combined efforts of human and machine significantly reduce the risk of missing tumors. The next goal is to apply this technology to breast biopsies. Meanwhile, discussions about banning artificial food colors continue, notably red dye number three, amid health concerns, although Texas has not enacted a ban like some other states.
UTMB said they are the first academic healthcare center in Texas to add an artificial intelligence-based tool to its routine workflow for the diagnosis of prostate cancer.
