Wisconsin’s Evers revives plan to enable voters to repeal and create state laws
SUMMARY: Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers is reintroducing his plan to allow voters to repeal and create state laws without legislative approval, included in the upcoming state budget. He aims to propose a constitutional amendment enabling voters to petition for ballot proposals, addressing issues like abortion, marijuana legalization, gun control, and education funding. Evers’ previous attempt in 2022 was blocked by Republicans. Wisconsin is among 24 states lacking such mechanisms. Despite his efforts, Republican control of the finance committee suggests they will likely remove this proposal from the budget before it reaches the Senate and Assembly for approval.

France’s former President Sarkozy standing trial over alleged campaign funding by Libya’s Gadhafi
SUMMARY: Nicolas Sarkozy, former French President, is on trial for alleged illegal financing of his 2007 presidential campaign by Libya’s late leader Moammar Gadhafi. The trial, which began recently and lasts until April 10, includes severe charges such as passive corruption and illegal campaign financing, potentially leading to a 10-year prison sentence. Sarkozy and 11 other defendants, including former ministers, deny wrongdoing. The case emerged after Gadhafi claimed to have funded Sarkozy’s campaign, with accompanying documents suggesting a substantial financial transaction. Investigations revealed multiple links to Libyan officials and led to a witness tampering inquiry. Sarkozy faces other legal issues as well.

Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office looking to expand traffic enforcement unit in 2025
SUMMARY: The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) is increasing traffic enforcement in 2025 to improve road safety, particularly targeting illegal street racing. This comes after an unpermitted car meetup in Riverside, involving over 40 vehicles, led to two arrests, including repeat offender Julio Rodriguez, who has been arrested five times for street racing in two years. JSO aims to deter street racing, which carries severe penalties. Previous operations resulted in significant arrests, fines, and vehicle impoundments. Experts suggest harsher penalties like jail time and vehicle loss may help curb repeat offenders. JSO plans to add more officers for enhanced enforcement.
