A cemetery for people enslaved by Andrew Jackson has been uncovered at The Hermitage
SUMMARY: Researchers have discovered a cemetery for people enslaved by President Andrew Jackson at The Hermitage, located just 1,000 feet from his main house in Nashville. Between 1788 and the Civil War, Jackson enslaved 325 people. A donation funded a collaboration with several organizations, leading to the identification of a five-acre search area. Radar imaging and other tools revealed depressions and limestone, suggesting grave sites. While 28 prospective graves have been identified, this number may change. The cemetery, now fenced and accessible by a walking path, will be included in tours, and a final report will be released in 2025.

Metro Arts finally has a grants plan for 2025. It has similar rules and less money for artists.
SUMMARY: In July 2024, the Metro Arts Lending Library added 53 new works to its Main Library’s Mezzanine Gallery. After recovering from a chaotic funding cycle in 2023, Metro Arts has a new plan for distributing $3.2 million in grants, down from over $7 million last year, amidst a record-high applicant pool exceeding 300. The two grant programs—general operating grants for nonprofits and Thrive for individual artists—will utilize a modified funding formula prioritizing smaller nonprofits. Changes to Thrive include capping amounts at $10,000 and requiring partnerships with nonprofit fiscal agents. Final approval from the Metro Council is awaited in January.
