Maternal mortality factors highlighted in federal agency map • Louisiana Illuminator
SUMMARY: The FCC has introduced a comprehensive maternal health map that combines broadband access data with maternal health indicators like food insecurity and gestational diabetes. This initiative comes amid heightened concerns over maternal health, particularly following reports of preventable deaths in states like Georgia and Texas post-Roe v. Wade reversal. FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel emphasized the need for measurable data to tackle the U.S.’s alarming maternal mortality rates, which disproportionately affect women of color. The map aims to identify areas lacking broadband, crucial for telemedicine, highlighting the intersection of internet access and maternal health outcomes, ultimately seeking solutions to improve care.

Sewer upgrades could unlock housing near UL, Downtown
SUMMARY: Lafayette’s sewer capacity has long hindered residential development, but planned upgrades by LUS, including a new pump station, could accommodate 2,000 more units. This will open space for apartment buildings and other high-demand projects in the urban core, including areas like UL Lafayette, Johnston Street, and the Oil Center. Developers will pay capital recovery fees to reserve sewage capacity. The station is a step toward addressing infrastructure shortfalls, which have slowed downtown growth. UL, with dorm overcrowding, is a major stakeholder. While improvements continue, the aging system faces challenges, including private property issues and capacity limitations.
