SUMMARY: Texas Rep. Dade Phelan announced he will not seek reelection as Speaker of the House, citing respect for the institution and the need for unity among members to support a new candidate. This announcement came just before House Republicans were set to vote for their next leader. Phelan, who has served two terms, faced criticism for his role in impeaching Attorney General Ken Paxton and overseeing a failed school choice bill. As the GOP prepares for the upcoming session, Rep. SUMMARY: KXAN’s “Preventing Disaster” investigation highlighted a deadly car crash into an Austin hospital ER, sparking city council discussions on safety barriers called bollards. These barriers could prevent such crashes, but many medical facilities resist their implementation due to aesthetic concerns. In response to the investigation, Austin’s City Council is considering an ordinance to require bollards at new hospitals and emergency rooms. While bollards are shown to be effective, critics argue the scope should extend to other public facilities. The measure, supported by local lawmakers, aims to prevent similar incidents, despite pushback from medical centers and some council members.

Parts of Southeast Texas coast under a ‘Low Water Advisory’

Published

www.youtube.com – KHOU 11 – 2024-12-11 12:25:09

SUMMARY: Strong winds in Galveston caused a low water advisory in Galveston Bay, particularly impacting mariners and ferry services. A ferry line suspended its service due to low water levels. The advisory is in effect until 4 p.m. today, with water levels expected to rise by dinner time and continue increasing through the evening. The low water is a result of strong north winds, which pushed water out of the bay into the Gulf of Mexico. It will take about 12 hours for the water to return, with higher levels anticipated later today.

Meteorologist Pat Cavlin explains what a low water advisory is and why one was issued on Wednesday.
