Catholic Action Center pushes for more winter shelters in Lexington over the holidays

Published

on

www.youtube.com – FOX 56 News – 2024-11-28 21:48:04

SUMMARY: For nearly 30 years, the Catholic Action Center in Lexington has supported the homeless, especially during the Thanksgiving Gratitude Meal. This annual event fills both bellies and souls as the community comes together to volunteer. Tana Fogle, outgoing first district council member, and Jenny Ramsey, the center’s director, have led this effort, despite the increasing demand for shelter. The city’s emergency plan currently houses some homeless in hotels, but the available rooms are insufficient. Ramsey and Fogle advocate for more resources, with Fogle planning to ask the city council for additional aid to support Lexington’s homeless population.

“Get some more hotel rooms; figure out how to expand this, because this year, the number of beds available is less than last year, and this year the number of homeless has increased.”

www.youtube.com – FOX 56 News – 2024-11-27 18:16:00

SUMMARY: Craig Caviar, a lifelong blacksmith, creates artful metal works showcased in exhibitions like the one at the Lexington Public Library. He finds therapy in his Louisville forge and aims to continue his work as long as possible. Recently, he’s gained attention for making simple garden tools from surrendered guns through the “Guns to Gardens” initiative, inspired by Isaiah’s biblical verse on transforming weapons into instruments for peace. Since 2022, the initiative has safely taken nearly 100 guns out of circulation. Caviar hopes his pieces promote peace and responsible gun ownership, contributing to reducing gun violence in the community.

Craig Kaviar shapes surrendered guns into tools and pieces of art as part of Louisville’s Guns to Gardens project.
