Driver’s license changes for new residents
SUMMARY: Tennessee is updating its driver’s license application requirements to improve safety and prevent duplicate licenses across states. Starting January 10, new or returning residents from nine states—California, Connecticut, Illinois, Kentucky, Maine, Nevada, Oklahoma, Vermont, and West Virginia—must provide a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) issued within the last 30 days. This change addresses gaps in the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators’ state-to-state (S2S) verification system, which Tennessee joined in 2018. Some states, like Kentucky, have yet to implement S2S, causing potential licensing issues. The MVR requirement is temporary, as all states are expected to adopt S2S by 2025.
