Mural honoring Evelyn Gandy unveiled in Hattiesburg

SUMMARY: Hattiesburg has unveiled a mural titled “Glass Ceiling” to honor Evelyn Gandy, Mississippi’s first woman elected to statewide office. Created through a partnership between the Hattiesburg Alliance for Public Art, the 19th Amendment Committee, and the 2024 Gandy Leadership Academy, local ninth graders participated in its completion. The academy, led by state Rep. Missy McGee, aims to empower high school girls through civic engagement and community awareness. The 14×17-foot mural symbolizes the barriers Gandy broke for women in politics and serves as inspiration for future leaders. Local artist Kym Garraway mentored the students throughout the project.

Jackson bass fisherman honored with Mississippi Outstanding Sportsman award

SUMMARY: Jackson native Alfred Williams, recently inducted into the Bass Fishing Hall of Fame, has received the Mississippi Outstanding Sportsman award for his contributions to fisheries conservation and breaking racial barriers in bass fishing. Following his Vietnam War service, Williams competed in bass tournaments as the only Black angler, achieving significant victories and becoming the first Black competitor to qualify for the prestigious 1983 Bassmaster Classic. Competing in nearly 300 events, he won four pro-level contests and continues to mentor aspiring Black anglers. The award recognizes his dedication to conservation and mentorship in Mississippi’s outdoor community.

Popular Biloxi seafood restaurant, co-owner sentenced for fishy business dealings

SUMMARY: Mary Mahoney’s Old French House in Biloxi, Mississippi, and co-owner Anthony Cvitanovich have faced federal penalties for seafood fraud. They misbranded around 58,750 pounds of imported fish as premium local species from 2013 to 2019. Cvitanovich pled guilty to felony misinformation regarding more than 17,000 pounds of mislabeling. The restaurant was sentenced to five years probation and ordered to pay $1.5 million in penalties, including a $149,000 fine. Additionally, it must maintain detailed records of seafood sources for five years. Cvitanovich received three years probation and four months home detention, with a $10,000 fine.

Mississippi State’s Albert Reese named top offensive lineman in state

SUMMARY: Albert Reese IV, a fourth-year junior offensive tackle for Mississippi State, has been awarded the 2024 Kent Hull Trophy, recognizing him as Mississippi’s top offensive lineman. Despite a challenging season, Reese’s performance at right tackle has significantly contributed to the team’s offensive improvements, helping the Bulldogs accumulate 1,766 rushing yards this season. He has started all 10 games and was also named to the Jason Witten Man of the Year watchlist for his community involvement. Reese is the seventh Mississippi State lineman to receive this honor, with the award presentation scheduled for December 3.
