SUMMARY: Florida is experiencing a rise in vibrio cases, particularly in the Tampa Bay area, due to recent storms. This bacteria, found in warm, brackish, or salt water, can cause severe infections, gastrointestinal issues, and even fatalities. The Florida Department of Health has reported a significant increase in cases, with 81 incidents and 16 deaths this year, up from 46 cases last year. Health officials advise avoiding floodwaters and untreated water, especially for those with open wounds or underlying health conditions. Symptoms include rash, swelling, fever, and severe infections can lead to septic shock. Immediate medical consultation is encouraged.

SUMMARY: In Brickell, condo owners are facing a $21 million special assessment for critical repairs to their 16-year-old building, prompting outrage among residents. The condo board approved the assessment without owner votes, citing Florida law and emphasizing the importance of safety after the Champlain Towers collapse. While the board insists repairs are necessary, residents feel excluded from the decision-making process. Several owners are considering selling their units due to the financial burden, and some hope for leadership changes in an upcoming election to revisit the assessment.

SUMMARY: Fifteen-year-old Zavi Gonzalez, who was born with fibular hemimelia and received his first amputation at eight months, is a role model for children with prosthetics in the Tampa Bay area. Passionate about sports, especially baseball, he believes in the power of perseverance, stating, “it’s not a disability, it’s a different ability.” Zavi has received over 15 prosthetic limbs through Shriners Children’s, which he credits with enabling his active life. He recently represented Tampa Bay at the Shriners Children’s Open, meeting golfer Rickie Fowler. Zavi aspires to become the first MLB player with a prosthetic limb, inspiring others to pursue their dreams.

When you watch 15-year-old Zavi Gonzalez field a ground ball or hit a double, you’d have no idea that this teenager from Lithia has only one leg. “When I was born, I was diagnosed with Fibular Hemimelia,” said Gonzalez. “I got my first amputation at eight months, and I got my first prosthesis at 12 months old.” He likes to say it’s not a disability; it’s a different ability, and he continues to prove it on the diamond by excelling at baseball.
