Property tax for Illinois woman going from $750 to $10,000
SUMMARY: Property owners in Montgomery County, Illinois, are concerned about significant tax increases after receiving new assessments. One landowner’s tax bill for a 96-acre tract, previously $756, is projected to rise to over $10,000 due to a woodland assessment. The increase stems from a 2007 state law mandating that farmland and timber be taxed at the same rate as residential properties, now properly implemented in the county. With tax hikes potentially reaching 1,500%, many worry they won’t be able to afford the new taxes, prompting the Board of Commissioners to hold a special session to address these concerns.

A 2007 law hadn’t been properly implemented that taxes tracts of land at the same rate as homes, hitting some with massive hikes.
