Justice Department sues Mississippi State Senate for race discrimination
SUMMARY: The Justice Department has filed a lawsuit against the Mississippi State Senate, claiming racial discrimination against Kristie Metcalfe, a Black former staff attorney. The suit alleges that Metcalfe was paid approximately half of her white colleagues’ salaries, violating Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke emphasized that such discriminatory practices are unlawful and damaging. The lawsuit seeks back pay and damages for Metcalfe, following an investigation by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), which referred the case to the DOJ after unsuccessful attempts at resolution.
