Tennessee economists present rosy revenue picture | Tennessee

SUMMARY: Tennessee economists presented varied revenue projections but concurred on the adverse effects of reduced franchise taxes. The Department of Revenue estimated a 1.6% revenue increase for fiscal year 2025 and a 3.1% increase for 2026. However, the franchise tax changes resulted in revenue losses between 11.54% and 17%. Dr. Don Bruce forecasted a nominal decline of 1.3% this year, with 2.5% growth in 2026. The recent food tax holiday is expected to boost revenues by $180 million this year. Dr. Joseph Newhard anticipates growth in small and medium businesses, projecting a 0.61% increase for 2024-25 and 4.54% for 2025-26.

Police chief accused of being paid for conference he did not attend | Tennessee

SUMMARY: Monterey Police Chief Bill Randolph faces multiple charges for allegedly skipping a training conference to shop and dine with his wife. According to a report by Tennessee Comptroller Jason Mumpower, Randolph improperly had a subordinate scan attendance QR codes to falsely appear as if he attended the November 2022 event. He received $1,200 for accommodations, $275 in per diem, and reimbursement for fuel and registration fees. A grand jury indicted him on charges including theft and official misconduct. Randolph maintains he did nothing wrong but is willing to reimburse expenses. He has been suspended pending investigation.
