Jackson mayor indicted on federal bribery charges
SUMMARY: Jackson Mayor Chokwe A. Lumumba has been indicted on bribery and related charges, following the indictments of former City Councilwoman Angelique Lee and Sherik Marve Smith in a bribery scandal. Lumumba maintains his innocence, stating he has never accepted bribes and views the charges as a political attack aimed at tarnishing his reputation. He plans to defend himself against the allegations. Smith pled guilty to conspiracy to commit bribery, with sentencing set for February 2025. Lee also faces similar charges, having allegedly accepted $19,000 in exchange for favorable votes on a real estate project linked to FBI sources.
