Texas sees 51% drop in border apprehensions after Operation Lone Star expands | Texas
SUMMARY: Border Patrol apprehensions of illegal crossers in Texas fell 51% in fiscal 2024, down to 534,333 from 1,045,655 in fiscal 2023. This decrease followed Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s expansion of Operation Lone Star (OLS) and the hiring of a border czar. While Texas saw a significant decline, illegal entries surged in New Mexico, Arizona, and California, where various sectors reported nearly double the apprehensions compared to Texas. The El Paso sector had the highest apprehensions in fiscal 2024, largely driven by increased activity in New Mexico. The drop in Texas reflects OLS’s efforts and collaboration with other states.
