Winston Co. man receives 15 years on federal drug charges
SUMMARY: Dennis Phillips, a 42-year-old man from Winston County, was sentenced to 188 months in federal prison for drug-related charges. He was convicted of possessing methamphetamine with the intent to distribute after law enforcement purchased over 30 grams from him through a confidential informant. A subsequent search of his home uncovered more than a kilogram of meth and two firearms, impacting the Choctaw Indian Reservation across several counties. The case involved multiple agencies, including the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Choctaw Police, and the DEA.

Brandon man convicted of sex crimes tries to escape custody after trial
SUMMARY: Franky Lee Lovern, Sr. of Brandon, Mississippi, was convicted of sexual battery and gratification of lust on October 30, 2024. Following the trial, as he was being escorted to the Rankin County Detention Center, Lovern attempted to overpower a deputy sheriff, resulting in a physical confrontation. Additional law enforcement intervened, and Lovern was subdued, sustaining injuries in the process. The deputy sheriff also suffered injuries. Lovern has now been charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, attempted escape, and other offenses. His sentencing is scheduled for January 6, 2025.

Mississippi man killed in Arkansas plane crash
SUMMARY: A tragic plane crash occurred in Van Buren County, Arkansas, near the county line with Stone County.
