Businesses, consumers urged to beware of scams this holiday season
SUMMARY: As the holiday season approaches, Mississippi officials warn of increasing scams targeting businesses and consumers. A notable scam involves misleading mail from C.F.S., which falsely claims to prepare mandatory annual reports for a fee. This mail is unauthorized by the state. Additionally, scammers may impersonate charitable organizations. The Mississippi Public Service Commission advises vigilance, urging individuals to verify the legitimacy of solicitations, avoid sharing personal information, recognize high-pressure tactics, and educate household members on common scams. Reporting suspicious activities to the Attorney General’s Office is encouraged. Staying informed can help protect communities during this festive season.

McComb police chief placed on leave amid investigation into officer-involved shooting
SUMMARY: McComb Police Chief Juan Cloy has been placed on administrative leave following a November 14 officer-involved shooting that resulted in the death of 16-year-old Jamarion Seiber. The shooting occurred when police responded to reports of a suspicious vehicle with individuals displaying firearms. Upon arrival, officers encountered two suspects, one of whom brandished a weapon, leading to the discharge of firearms by the police. The vehicle involved fled the scene, and while a 2016 Dodge Charger was later found, other suspects remain at large. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is conducting an assessment, and Cloy’s leave is not an indication of wrongdoing.

Federal judge rules Jackson officials did not discriminate when moving offices from Metrocenter Mall
SUMMARY: A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit against Jackson filed by Retro Metro, LLC, after the city ended its lease early at Metrocenter Mall due to unsafe conditions, including raw sewage and water leaks. Retro Metro sought damages for breach of contract, as the city had moved offices to a new location. The judge also dismissed a separate discrimination claim by Retro Metro, which alleged preferential treatment for white-owned companies. The court concluded that the city acted to protect employees and the public, and the decision to relocate was not racially motivated, as emphasized by Jackson’s officials.
