The current case challenges a July ruling from the conservative 5th Circuit, emphasizing the need for judicial intervention in altering these laws.

Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba, Councilman Aaron Banks, and District Attorney Jody Owens face federal charges, including bribery and conspiracy, related to a real estate development scheme. They are accused of accepting bribes from FBI informants posing as developers. The defense argues that the discovery process, involving hours of recordings and thousands of documents, will require months to review. The trial is scheduled for January 6, 2025, but no decision has been made on the delay request.
