Pickens Co. loses one of its two ambulances
SUMMARY: Emergency healthcare in Pickens County, Alabama, has faced serious challenges since the local hospital closed in March 2020, leading to delayed medical help and even patient deaths. Despite establishing a 24-hour ambulance service and a 16-hour emergency service, the county’s situation worsened with the recent decision to operate only one 24-hour ambulance starting October 25. This change, attributed to funding issues, has raised concerns among local leaders about increased response times and reliance on neighboring counties for assistance. Mayor Mickey Walker suggests potential funding solutions, including a public vote on adding fees to car tags, to improve the situation.
