SUMMARY: On October 20, 1977, a plane crash tragically claimed the lives of three members of the iconic rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd: lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, and backup singer Cassie Gaines. The small Convair CV-240 ran out of fuel at 10,000 feet, crashing in a wooded area on the Louisiana-Mississippi border. Alongside the band members, assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick and the flight crew also perished. Despite the tragedy, 20 survived.
