“It looks like a bomb went off,” hurricane clean-up continues weeks later
SUMMARY: Yesterday, my photographer and I visited Anamaria Island to shoot a story about a nonprofit. We explored Holmes Beach and encountered extensive hurricane debris, remnants of Hurricane Helen that have lingered for weeks. Charles Fletcher, a local resident, shared his difficulty in coping with the devastation, likening the scene to a war zone. Despite the destruction, he and his family are determined to rebuild, planning to replace their damaged home’s drywall and appliances. The mayor of Holmes Beach has yet to provide further comment, but the city recently announced the collection of nearly 31,000 cubic yards of debris, with more pickups planned.
Drive around Holmes Beach on Anna Maria Island and it’s hard to ignore the massive debris piles in front of the majority of homes.

Sarah Boone sends photo of Jorge Torres' torn-up birth certificate
SUMMARY: On June 2, 2019, an owner expressed a strong desire to connect with Jorge, asking multiple times for him to call back. The owner reminisced about playing darts, requested hugs, and expressed missing him significantly. The conversations included exchanges with Jorge’s mom, who commented on the childish nature of some messages but acknowledged their effectiveness. Despite the owner’s persistent outreach, there were indications of conflict, as the owner mentioned not pursuing contact after a certain time. Ultimately, the day included plans to go out and a sense of longing for connection amidst familial dynamics.

Florida cracking down on porch pirates thanks to new law
SUMMARY: Florida is intensifying efforts against porch piracy, designating it a third-degree felony for stealing packages valued over $40. The new law, influenced by rising theftsโover $8 billion in lost packages nationwide last yearโaims to deter thieves and enhance community safety. Residents like Donovan K. from Pine Crest have reported multiple thefts, highlighting the issue’s prevalence. Governor Ron DeSantis reassured that stolen packages would result in significant consequences for thieves. As the law takes effect this month, security experts recommend measures like surveillance and adjusting delivery schedules to reduce theft risks, particularly as the holiday season approaches.
CBS News Miami’s Larry Seward explains how the law will reclassify stealing packages as a third-degree felony in some cases.
