Barling voters consider pair of sales tax extensions
SUMMARY: Voters are considering the continuation of two 1% sales and use taxes in the city, each with specific allocations. One cent supports the fire department, ensuring quick response times, averaging 2 minutes and 15 seconds, as it funds full-time firefighters. The other cent is designated for improving city streets, sidewalks, drainage, and alleyways. With Barling being the only other city in Sebastian County with a full-time fire department, maintaining these services is crucial. Approving this measure will ensure essential funding for both fire safety and infrastructure improvements critical for the community.
There are two taxes of 1% each. Together, they brought in $300,000 last year.

How burn bans are impacting camping in Arkansas
SUMMARY: As drought conditions worsen in Central Arkansas, residents are urged to rethink outdoor activities due to increasing burn bans. Thomas Rothar from the US Army Corps of Engineers emphasizes that extended periods without rain have lowered water levels, exposing hazards in lakes. Camping experiences may also change, as fire restrictions vary by municipality; while some areas prohibit all fires, others may allow cooking on non-open flames. Rothar advises campers to always check local regulations before visiting parks. Additionally, park rangers highlight that windy conditions can exacerbate fire risks, making awareness of weather crucial for safety.
As the number of days without rain and the number of counties under burn bans grow, local administrators are sharing tips for best practices when camping.

Issue 2 debate continues in Arkansas as Election Day nears
SUMMARY: Cherokee Nation CEO Chuck Garrett spoke in Russellville, highlighting concerns over Issue Two, which could prevent Pope County from obtaining a casino license. County Judge Ben Cross emphasized the economic benefits, including jobs and tax revenue from the proposed casino and its associated businesses. In contrast, H. Sturz, representing Local Voters in Charge, advocates for the amendment, arguing it reflects the 2018 election’s outcome that established four casino licenses in Arkansas. While three counties voted in favor, Pope County opposed the measure with 61%, indicating a community sentiment against the casino initiative.
The debate over Issue 2 is heating up in Pope County as officials on both sides are trying to sway voters before Election Day.
