Petal youngsters get a quick peek at possible futures
SUMMARY: Nick Lor from WDAM Storm Tracker visited Pedal for Community Helper Day, an event aimed at educating young minds about public service roles. Numerous essential workers, including firefighters, police, ambulance crews, and linemen, engaged with local children, teaching them how to seek help during emergencies. The Junior Panthers learned about the impact of weather on their lives and the importance of being weather-aware during storms. The event, organized by Miss Jan and Miss Perry, allowed kids to understand community roles while cultivating curiosity, especially after recent lessons on the water cycle and seasonal changes. Members of the armed forces also participated.

NAACP: Deputies show up to listening session
SUMMARY: At a recent listening session hosted by the Rankin County NAACP at Mount Carmel Ministries, individuals were encouraged to share their experiences with the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department. However, the presence of unannounced attorneys from the sheriff’s department created an intimidating environment, preventing speakers from sharing their stories. Angela English, president of the NAACP, noted that this intimidation led them to reconsider their approach. This event follows the fallout from the “Goon Squad” case where five former deputies were implicated in the torture of two Black men. Community members are urged to document and share their experiences.
In what was supposed to be a listening session between the Department of Justice and potential victims of unfair treatment from the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department took a different turn.
