Landry administration aims for constitutional changes required for tax reform | Louisiana
SUMMARY: Louisiana lawmakers are considering a significant rewrite of Article VII of the state constitution as part of Gov. Jeff Landry’s tax reform initiatives. Key proposals include extending the 100% prescription drug tax exemption to local parishes, doubling the standard deduction for seniors over 65, and streamlining local tax management. Landry’s plan also aims to address teacher pay by facilitating a $2 billion payment to reduce unfunded liabilities and implement permanent raises. Richwood detention facility has history of disease-related problems since 2020 | Louisiana
SUMMARY: Louisiana officials have filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after a migrant tested positive for drug-resistant tuberculosis at a privately-run facility with a history of infectious disease issues. Governor Jeff Landry highlighted concerns over border security and public health. The U.S. District Court issued a temporary restraining order preventing ICE from releasing potentially infectious detainees without health department approval. The lawsuit follows whistleblower reports alleging unsafe practices at the Richwood Correctional Center, such as mixing exposed and healthy detainees and inadequate safety measures during the COVID-19 pandemic, increasing disease transmission risks.
