South Carolina election official answers lingering questions about casting ballots
SUMMARY: Early voting has begun in South Carolina, with over 20,000 ballots cast in Ory County. Some voters, especially recent transplants, have experienced confusion regarding absentee voting and registration statuses in multiple states. South Carolina election officials advise contacting local election offices to ensure proper registration. Voting in multiple states can result in severe consequences, including law enforcement involvement. Absentee ballots must be requested and returned by October 25th at 5 PM, and must arrive by 7 PM on Election Day. Address changes for voter registration must be made before registration deadlines, or directly at the DMV for driver’s licenses.
As South Carolinians hit the polls, there have been some questions. ABC15 spoke with an election official to get some of the answers residents are asking.
Recent South Carolina transplants getting ready to vote noticed their voter registration is active both here in their new state and in the state they just moved from.

Deadly string of contaminations continues
SUMMARY: A deadly Listeria outbreak linked to ready-to-eat meat has resulted in the deaths of two infants in California, with nine others hospitalized. The CDC is investigating the outbreak, and the USDA has recalled 72,000 pounds of contaminated meat products across four states. This follows several other foodborne illness outbreaks, including Listeria-tainted deli meat, E. coli in McDonald’s onions, and contaminated organic carrots. Experts stress the importance of food safety and sanitation to prevent such outbreaks, urging consumers to dispose of recalled products and sanitize their refrigerators.

States say court must block Department of Education’s Title IX rule | National
SUMMARY: This month, states and private organizations requested the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals to overturn a district court’s decision permitting the Biden administration’s expanded Title IX rules, which include gender identity in sex discrimination laws. Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina seek a preliminary injunction against the Department of Education, arguing they are similarly situated to states already granted relief. The Department contends that noncontroversial aspects of the rule should go into effect. Legal battles have blocked the implementation of the rule in over half of the states and many educational institutions, delaying enforcement amid ongoing litigation.

David Smith, father of sons murdered by ex-wife Susan Smith, speaks in opposition to her parole
SUMMARY: In a poignant statement to the committee, a father advocated against the release of his children’s mother, who is serving a life sentence for their deaths. Reflecting on the lasting emotional trauma, he expressed that her actions were intentional and that she had never shown remorse. The father, who revealed that the grief led him to contemplate suicide, argued that the 30-year sentence was insufficient, given the severity of the crime. He pleaded for the committee to deny her release, vowing to attend future hearings to ensure justice for his children.
David Smith, the father of 3-year-old Michael and 14-month-old Alexander, spoke in opposition at the parole hearing for his ex-wife Susan Smith, who murdered the two boys in 1994.
