Police chief says rape kit backlog is #1 priority
SUMMARY: Fort Worth Police Chief has acknowledged a significant backlog of over 900 unprocessed rape kits in the department’s crime lab, which must be prioritized for resolution. The backlog has emerged due to a lack of specialized staff for DNA processing. Chief Neil Noes expressed disappointment over a lack of transparency regarding the issue, while Councilwoman Gina Biven voiced frustration about the situation and the impact on victims. The department aims to resolve the backlog by April 2025. Biven has suggested seeking assistance from local health institutions for expedited processing, emphasizing the urgency of addressing this critical problem.
The massive backlog includes more than 900 unprocessed rape kits. A breakdown was blamed on a shortage of specialized staff who process DNA in the police department’s crime lab.ย
