Columbus first responders receive new storm shelters
SUMMARY: Columbus Fire and Rescue has received its first two storm shelters, enhancing safety for first responders during severe weather events. Previously, firefighters sought shelter under trucks during tornado warnings. Fire Station One will house three shelters, while other stations will each have two. The initiative, five years in the making, was motivated by past experiences where responders were exposed during emergency situations. Fire Chief Duane Hughes emphasizes that these shelters, funded largely by a federal grant, will allow emergency personnel to seek refuge and continue providing essential services to the community during storms.
