Officials break ground on Amtrak passenger rail along Gulf Coast
SUMMARY: Amtrak has resumed passenger rail services along the Gulf Coast after nearly 20 years, with a groundbreaking ceremony held in Mobile, Alabama. This marks the first operation since Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Despite initial opposition, the Mobile City Council unanimously approved funding for the service for the next three years. The new route will connect Mobile and New Orleans with stops in four Mississippi cities. The project has been supported by a $178 million grant from the Federal Railroad Administration. Officials aim for the service to be operational by Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans on February 9, 2025.

Vacant Jackson council seat filled in special election runoff
SUMMARY: Montyne “Tina” Clay has won the special election runoff for Jackson‘s vacant Ward 2 city council seat, succeeding Angelique Lee, who resigned amid a federal corruption investigation. Clay, a local businesswoman, received 1,509 votes, defeating retired military officer Marcus Cheatham, who garnered 920 votes. Their runoff resulted from neither candidate securing over 50% in the previous general election. Clay’s term will last less than a year, with municipal elections, including for the council and mayor, scheduled for spring 2025. The ongoing corruption probe has implicated multiple city officials, escalating scrutiny on local governance.
